more than one thing… again

I think spring cleaning has begun at our place, and boy does it feel good!  (Actually, I think it’s going to feel even better once the big stack of ‘to donate’ stuff in the corner finally makes it to the Salvation Army … but that’s a minor detail, right?)

Anyway, we decided that, since we really aren’t getting rid of a cat, we really owe two weeks worth of things to toss.  Now, we did splurge a bit on a new dresser this past week which has made a (kind of surprisingly) HUGE difference in the way our place looks, mostly by making it easy to do some serious re-organizing throughout the apartment.  Not only can we finally get at the clothes in our closet easily, but the crates that were housing our socks, pants, etc. have been repurposed into bookshelves, giving us accessible shelving for all of our books!  I’m really impressed with the change after only a couple of hours worth of organizing.

As for the actual items we are tossing for weeks 13 and 14, there’s a stack of files and a small file holder, the last of my romantic comedy/comedy DVDs and a whole stack of mostly textbooks that for some reason just haven’t made it onto our recreational reading list in a while.  Replacing my old hodge-podge filing system with some swanky new filing boxes from Ikea has been more exciting than it probably should be … but what can I say?  My life is just a whirlwind of adventure like that.  The bonus of these boxes is that they fit exactly into the cubbyholes in our desk, so there’s no wasted space.  By tossing out the straggling remains of my DVD collection, we’ve been able to take an old shelf that had been holding mostly random junk and make it a second bookshelf.  So, with the cumbersome stack of mostly-textbooks gone, we now have easy access to our entire library.  (They’re not quite organized according to the Dewy Decimal system mom, but I do have them mostly sorted by author and genre.)  Really not too bad for an afternoon’s work.

So, here are a couple shots of the before and after of our closet, as well as one of our new bookcases.  The place is really starting to look homey instead of cluttered – loving it!

Boy do I miss our wall-to-wall closet in Fredericton!
It’s a lot trickier to live life without a dresser when there’s no real room to have shelves for all the non-hangables.

Do you SEE all that space?!  I am literally giddy right now.
(Also – moving Paddy’s crash pad into the back of the closet has given us a whole extra 8 inches of space in the office … which is also a major cause for celebration!)

Gotta love purple filing boxes … and a bookcase topped with lots of Lego!

Until next week :)
