Wow, 23 weeks into the year … that’s almost halfway through! (Hard to believe for a lot of reasons.) I’m kinda impressed that we’re still doing this … and completely determined to make it a full-year’s project.
This week’s nominees for the thrift store/garbage bin are:
Another stack of DVDs! With Netflix, iTunes move rental and digital storage, I find I’m using my physical videos less and less. Sure, the favourites still get popped in (another Jurassic Park marathon anyone?), but for sheer background noise and entertainment, we usually pick something we can simply stream. When a movie makes it to my ‘must buy’ list now, it’s usually because I need to see all the special features and making-of documentaries … or just because I feel it needs to live in my fantasy collection. Maybe my tastes have changed … maybe it’s just my lifestyle. Either way, these movies will hopefully find better homes with someone else, and I’d be surprised if more of my collection didn’t join them before the year is up.
Bugbear’s cat tunnel. Don’t worry, we’re not depriving the poor little guy of entertainment, but a couple of years ago, Mama O’Brien bought him a big fancy one that crinkles and lights up. He loves it. So, in the new place, his smaller tunnel hasn’t even been unravelled yet. I’m sure some other cat will have tons of fun with this one.
A coal starter? Ok, this thing has been sitting in the corner of our deck for almost a year now, and until Paddy decided to toss it this week I had no idea what it was. Apparently, as the name suggests, you use it to start burning the coals for the BBQ. But Paddy’s refined BBQ technique includes starting the coals directly in the BBQ … so, despite the lovely photogenic rust stains, this little guy is heading to the curb this week.
and finally … a pair of sandals. I’ll admit, although they’re Paddy’s sandals, this one is kinda my fault. Last year we were walking downtown with some friends and I may have accidentally stepped on the back of his sandal … and it broke. To avoid walking around Toronto in bare feet (not the most advisable activity) we ducked into the nearest Winners and bought the cheapest pair of sandals available. Anyone who knows Paddy knows that plastic Adidas sandals are not quite his style. So as soon as spring hit this year, we were in another shoe store, picking out a proper pair of flip flops. And now it’s ‘adios, Adidas!’
(Of course my next step is actually taking this latest stack … and the stack from last week and the week before down the street to the thrift shop so that it’s actually out of the house, but the important thing is the decision, right?)
