One month in, and I’m really enjoying this one-thing-a-week challenge – it feels great to be getting rid of some of the excess stuff we’ve accumulated, and week 4’s choice is making this apartment feel a bit more like ours.
When Paddy first moved in here, the previous tenants offered to leave a few things behind (for a small fee). We got some decent patio furniture, a bbq, an air conditioner, and a rather large print of some cityscape. While there is no chance I will be getting rid of the patio furniture, the bbq, or the air conditioner until we have plenty of money to upgrade to shinier, fancier models, the photo has really just been filling space. It does this very well, but it’s really not ‘us’. At all. So, we’re saying goodbye to the print, and I’m finally hanging up some prints that I have been planning to since we were in Fredericton! I’ve had these awesome comics for a couple of years now: each frame depicts an entire Harry Potter novel (save the last book, which has 2 frames). They’re rather hilarious. I had been waiting to get them all properly framed or mounted, but finances haven’t allowed (8 frames is a lot, even if we go with cheap-o Walmart ones!) and so they’ve been sitting in a box. (Throwing things out, *and* emptying a box? It’s a good week!) I’m so much happier now that they’re up and displayed, all wonderfully nerdy and colourful on our wall! And if the command strips that I used damage the print, I have high resolution files that I can print again (major kudos to the artist for allowing that!!) Already the space feels better: there’s nothing like lovely, lighthearted Harry Potter fan art to geek-up a room! (If you’re interested in who made these awesome cartoon prints, you can find Lucy here: http://www.lucyknisley.com/about, although I couldn’t easily find the HP prints on her current site.)

We’re also getting a bit ahead of the game and posting this next week’s items a bit early. My cousin Brent is flying in from Winnipeg this weekend to hang out with us, and I imagine we’ll be far too busy doing all kinds of other fun things to worry about what to get rid of!
Week 5’s things are more duplicates. I don’t know if it’s a result of being Canadian or not, but we do seem to have an excess of winter gear here. Regardless of the fact that the Toronto winter has been so toothless that we have hardly needed any sort of winter gear (I’ve been wearing my fall/spring coat for all but 3 days so far!), we certainly don’t need multiple sets of toques and gloves, so a couple of our older items are heading off to the local Sally Ann. Here’s to hoping that passing along winter gear is not some sort of a jinx that causes an epic cold snap!
